Soft Toy Sizes Explained: 13cm, 23cm, 33cm and Which to Buy

Soft Toy Sizes Explained: 13cm, 23cm, 33cm and Which to Buy — Rufni

Buying a soft toy online has one genuine difficulty: you cannot pick it up. A photograph tells you the colour, the expression and roughly the shape, but it tells you almost nothing about scale. We have lost count of the number of people who have told us they bought something expecting a substantial cuddly toy and received something that fits in a pocket — or the reverse.

So here is the guide we wish had existed when we started. Every measurement below is the manufacturer's own, and every size we mention is one we actually stock.

The four sizes that matter

Most soft toys sold in the UK fall into four bands, and once you know them the category becomes much easier to navigate.

Around 10cm — the clip-on. Small enough to attach to a school bag, a rucksack strap or a set of keys. These almost always have a clip or a loop sewn in, which is the point of them. They are not really for cuddling; they are for carrying.

Around 13cm — the palm size. This is the size that sits in a hand, stands on a desk, and lines up on a shelf. It is the standard size for most collectible ranges, including Palm Pals, and it is the reason those ranges work: small enough to collect several, large enough to have a face you can see properly.

Around 23cm — the small cuddly. This is the first size that genuinely works as something to hold. It is a good size for a small child, for a hospital bag, or for a gift where you want presence without bulk.

Around 33cm — the proper cuddly toy. This is what most people picture when they think "soft toy". Big enough to tuck under an arm in bed, substantial enough to feel like a real present, and still small enough to fit in a suitcase.

How to picture the measurement

A 13cm toy is roughly the length of an adult hand from wrist to fingertip. A 23cm toy is about the length of a sheet of A4 paper's short edge. A 33cm toy is a little longer than that same sheet's long edge.

One thing worth knowing: the stated height usually includes ears. A 23cm rabbit is not a 23cm body with ears on top — the ears are part of the measurement. This catches people out with rabbits and giraffes in particular.

Weight matters more than you would think

Two toys of the same height can feel completely different. Our 23cm Bonnie Honey teddy bear weighs 70g; the 33cm version of the same bear weighs 150g. That is a little over double the weight for ten extra centimetres, and the difference in how substantial it feels is larger than the difference in how it looks.

Heatable toys are heavier again, because they are filled with grain rather than fibre. A 23cm Warmies weighs around 227g and the 33cm around 907g — four times the weight for one size step. That weight is the entire point of them: it is what makes a heated toy feel reassuring across your shoulders rather than like a warm cushion.

Choosing by who it is for

A newborn or a very young baby. Smaller is better, and softness matters more than size. A comforter like the Brenna Bunny is designed to be gripped rather than carried, which is what babies actually do with them.

A toddler. 23cm is usually the sweet spot. Big enough to matter, small enough to be dragged around the house without being abandoned halfway up the stairs.

A child who already has too many soft toys. Go smaller and more specific. A 13cm collectible from a range they already own is worth more to them than another large bear that has nowhere to live.

An adult. 33cm, every time. Adults who buy soft toys — for themselves or as a comfort gift — want the substantial one. This is also true of heatable toys, where the larger size holds heat noticeably longer.

A party bag or a stocking. 10cm to 13cm. Look at our gifts under £10.

When a product page offers a choice

Several of our listings now let you pick the size on the page itself rather than sending you to a separate product. The Palm Pals Amanita Mushroom is a good example: it comes as a clip-on, the standard 13cm, a medium and a large, and each option has its own photographs so you can see what you are actually getting.

We did this deliberately. Comparing two sizes of the same toy across two browser tabs is a miserable way to shop, and it is how people end up ordering the wrong one.

If you are still unsure

Measure something. Find a ruler, mark 23cm and 33cm on the edge of a table, and look at the gap. It takes fifteen seconds and it is far more reliable than judging from a photograph on a phone screen.

And if you get it wrong, we take returns for 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, and 30 days as our own policy. Nobody should be stuck with a toy that turned out to be a quarter of the size they pictured.
