Every soft toy we sell is tested, certified and marked for sale in the United Kingdom. This page explains exactly what that means, so you can buy with confidence.
EN 71 safety certification
EN 71 is the European and UK safety standard for toys. Every product in our range is certified to the relevant parts of that standard by its manufacturer:
- EN 71-1 — mechanical and physical properties, including small parts, sharp edges and the strength of seams and attachments.
- EN 71-2 — flammability.
- EN 71-3 — migration of certain elements, which limits heavy metals such as lead and cadmium in the materials a child may touch or mouth.
Conformity marking
Our suppliers test to EN 71 and hold the test certificates and declarations of conformity. Aurora and Warmies publish CE marking for their ranges; CE remains recognised for the Great Britain market. Where a product carries EN 71 testing as well, it appears on the product or its packaging. If you need the conformity paperwork for a specific product, email info@rufni.com and we will request it from the manufacturer.
Age suitability
Every product page states the age the manufacturer recommends. We use two categories:
- Suitable from birth — no plastic eyes or detachable parts. Features are embroidered, and there is nothing that could come loose and present a choking hazard. This covers the Aurora Eco Nation and Ebba Eco ranges.
- Ages 3+ — may include bean filling, glitter eyes or other small components.
Please follow the age guidance on the product page and the product's own labelling. If you are buying for a baby, choose a product marked suitable from birth.
Warmies and heated products
Warmies are filled with millet and dried French lavender from Provence, and are designed to be warmed in a microwave. Warmies state that they are suitable for all ages but must only be used under careful adult supervision, and that only an adult should operate the microwave. Heating times differ by size and by oven: the full-size 13-inch toys take 60 seconds at 600-800W or 45 seconds at 850-1,000W, and the 9-inch Junior toys take 30 seconds at 600-800W or 20 seconds at 850-1,000W. Never exceed the time on the label sewn into the toy; if you are unsure, add warmth in 5 to 10-second increments rather than in one long burst. A warmed Warmies can cause burns, so check the temperature before giving it to a child and avoid prolonged contact with bare skin. Reheat only once the toy has returned to room temperature, which can take up to four hours. Stand it on a plate, never on metal racking, do not heat a Warmies that is wet, and never use a conventional or combination oven.
Care and washing
Care instructions are listed on each product page and on the product's own label. Most of our plush is surface washable with a damp cloth; some baby items are machine washable at 30°C. Warmies must never be immersed in water.
Recalls and safety concerns
If you have a concern about the safety of a product you have bought from us, stop using it and contact us at info@rufni.com. We will respond within one working day, arrange a return and a full refund, and pass the issue to the manufacturer. Should a manufacturer issue a recall affecting a product we have sold, we will contact affected customers directly using the order details we hold.
Documentation
Every range we sell is tested to EN 71, and the test certificates and declarations of conformity are held by the manufacturers — Aurora World and Warmies. If you need the documentation for a specific product, email info@rufni.com with the product name and we will get it to you.
